In 2021, 13 EU Member States with nuclear electricity production generated 731 701 gigawatt hours (GWh) of nuclear electricity (+7% compared with 2020; +48 189 GWh). This accounts for over 25% of the EU’s total electricity production.
The largest producer of nuclear power in the EU in 2021 was France (52% of the EU total nuclear energy production; 379 361 GWh), followed by Germany (9%; 69 130 GWh), Spain (8%; 56 564 GWh), Sweden (7%; 52 965 GWh) and Belgium (7%; 50 326 GWh). These five countries together accounted for more than 83% of the total amount of electricity generated in nuclear facilities in the EU, Eurostat reports.
In 2021, 13 EU Member States with nuclear electricity production had 106 nuclear reactors in operation altogether, down from 109 at the beginning of 2020.
France remained the EU Member State most reliant on nuclear electricity, which represented 69% of all electricity generated in the country in 2021. The other two EU Member States with more than half of their electricity generated in nuclear power plants were Slovakia (52%) and Belgium (51%). The Netherlands (3%), Germany (12%) and Romania (19%) were on the other end of the spectrum.
