Everyone Should Forget Dream Of My Resignation - Georgian President

პრეზიდენტი ტრიბუნასთან

“Everyone should forget the dream of my resignation; I am here where I am, but I will go wherever I am supposed to go; this is my constitutional obligation,” said Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili in a live address to the nation on GPB First Channel.

Below is her address:

“I know what sort of future you want for Georgia. I know that the solution to all the problems facing the country today, be it corruption, outflow of people, or uncontrolled entry of Russians into this country, will not be solved, but dealt with step by step when we join the European Union. This is our sole perspective. That’s why I’m not leaving.

That’s why I am travelling [to EU nations]. I’ve visited Berlin, Brussels, [and] Paris. I use my contacts, and [their] trust in me, but first and foremost [your] trust. If you hadn’t come out and showed the rest of Europe how important this prospect is to you, I would not have had such confidence. When I meet different leaders, they know that you chose me and you chose this perspective, [and] this future.

I am proud to do this today with my own funds, although it is not right for the state since the President of the nation should not travel to such important meetings with her own funds, but it doesn’t matter because I will continue [to do so]. I have a plan for the next countries to visit. I hope to be able in these two and a half or three months to visit the main capitals of Europe and deliver your wish, [and] your dream.

Everyone knows Georgia aspires to this, and that Georgia will never stand under the feet of Russia, this is what we must protect collectively.

It will be beneficial if the government recognizes and adjusts to this. If not, perhaps its future also depends on it.

I have faith in you, and you have faith in me; we will walk together until the end,” declared the President.

Last week, the ruling party decided to impeach the country’s President, after Salome Zourabichvili “violated” the constitution by traveling to European Union countries without the government’s permission.
