Global crude steel production down 2.4% in April

World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the international trade body for the iron and steel industry, was 161.4 million tons in April 2023, down 2.4% compared to April 2022.

The UK, Türkiye, India, China, Russia, Brazil, Germany, Iran, South Korea, and Japan were the top 10 steel-producing countries in January-April 2023, worldsteel, headquartered in Brussels, said Wednesday.

China, the world's largest steel producer, produced 92.6 million tons in April 2023, down 1.5% from April 2022, worldsteel said.

Japan produced 7.2 million tons, down 3.1%, while the US produced 6.6 million tons, down 5.3%, the international trade body noted.

Türkiye produced 2.7 million tons in April 2023, down 20.6% from April 2022, while Germany produced 3.2 million tons, down 3.8%, it said.

Global crude steel production fell 0.3% to 622.7 million tons in January-April 2023, compared to the same period last year, worldsteel added.

The 63 countries included in this table accounted for nearly 97% of total world crude steel production in 2022, AA reports.
