More Than Half Of Georgia's Population Lack Basic Skills To Use Internet - Digital Trends 2021

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) published a report on Digital Trends 2021. ITU data shows that more than 75% of the total world population has an active mobile broadband subscription, and over 57%of households have internet access at home.

As for Georgia and its neighboring countries, Turkey has the highest number of internet access in the region, with 88% of households having access to the internet at home, Georgia and Azerbaijan have exactly the same rates exceeding 79%. As for Russia and Armenia, there are almost the same numbers - about 77% of the population has access to the Internet at home.

As for the use of the Internet by individuals, such as mobile Internet: the highest rate is in Russia - 83%, followed by Azerbaijan, where 81% of citizens use the Internet, the third place is occupied by Turkey with 74%, Georgia has only better rates than Armenia and 69% of our population uses the Internet.

As for the internet access, use and skills, Europe is leading in Internet access at the global level, with 85% of households estimated by ITU to have had Internet access in 2019, compared to 57.4% globally. The proportion of individuals that was using the Internet in 2019 totalled 82.5% in Europe and 51.4% globally.

According to the report, 69% of Georgian citizens does not have basic knowledge of how to use the Internet. In Russia, the basic Internet literacy rate stands at 38%, while in Azerbaijan the rate is 42%.
