The Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee, together with the field experts and representatives of the executive authorities met to discuss the e-commerce reform and the draft law on E-Commerce.
The working group includes members of the Parliament as well as representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Global Compact Georgia Network, and the USAID Economic Governance Program.
It was mentioned during the presentation of the draft law that its adoption would give e-commerce a legal framework, ensure the free flow of public services in the internal market, protect consumers' rights during the e-commerce process, and exempt the intermediary service provider from general monitoring obligations.
"In the modern world, as technologies advance, the significance of electronic commerce also grows. As a result, the creation of a legal framework in this area is tied to the growth of entrepreneurship and additional electronic trade in the nation, both of which will help Georgia integrate into the world of trade. This is a development in the direction of a global digital market", - the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Guram Guramishvili stated.
As the Chairman of the Committee, David Songhulashvili noted at the meeting, the draft law will contribute to the growth of the economy and will especially encourage small and medium-sized businesses. This is an opportunity and a platform to create even more tools that will serve the growth of the economy.
"As of right now, Georgia's e-commerce industry is not subject to any specific regulatory laws. As one of the key tools for quick integration into global trade, the e-commerce sector must therefore conform to the proper legal framework. Therefore, with the reform of electronic commerce, it will be possible to develop additional incentives for economic growth, which will help introduce standards that are recognized globally, boost the sector's credibility, increase Georgia's export potential, and bring local businesses' goods to the global market", - Davit Songhulashvili remarked.
At the meeting, it was stated that the draft law has been discussed in the private sector, in the near future the discussion will be completed in the public sector as well, after which the Georgian government will initiate the draft law in the parliament.
The working meeting was held within the framework of the grant activity: " Supporting the Sustainability and Capacity Building of the Public-Private Dialogue Platform in the Parliament of Georgia", which is carried out by the Global Compact Georgia Network in collaboration with the Parliament.
