In January-August 2023 the external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to USD 14 billion, 16.8% higher to the same period of 2022, - according to the preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
According to the document, the exports equaled USD 4 079 billion (14.4 percent higher), while the imports stood at USD 9 925 billion (17.8 percent higher). The negative trade balance was USD 5 846 billion in January and August 2023 and its share in external trade turnover constituted 41.7%.
In January-August 2023 the share of the top ten trading partners in the total external trade turnover of Georgia amounted to 68.7 percent. The top trading partners were Türkiye, Russia and USA. Russia has a 12% share in the total trade. During this period, the trade turnover between Georgia and Russia amounted to USD 1 billion 686 million.
Russia took the third place in the ranking of the largest exporting countries. During the first 8 months of the current year, Georgia sold goods worth USD 461 million 385 thousand to Russia. Accordingly, the exports rate increased by 15.3% y-o-y.
The exports of wine of fresh grapes occupied the first place in the list of top export items to Russia.
