Compulsory tourist insurance will be necessary, including the Covid component - the head of the National Center for Disease Control, Amiran Gamkrelidze, told reporters at a media webinar.

He said that changes have already been prepared on this issue, which should be submitted to the Interagency Council.

"If Covid is confirmed to an incoming tourist, all companies shall warn their partners that tourists should be insured accordingly, including the covid insurance component. Appropriate insurance should reimburse the treatment. Appropriate amendments have been submitted. I think they will be adopted in time. The issue of reimbursement will be tied to the compulsory insurance component that a tourist should be equipped with," said Amiran Gamkrelidze.

As for the foreign citizen infected in Georgia, Amiran Gamkrelidze says that in case of infection, the tourist will be isolated, and if necessary - hospitalized.

"As for the payment for the treatment, it is provided by the insurance component, which the tourist must have," Gamkrelidze said.

Georgian insurance companies have already applied to the Ministry of Health to offer an insurance package to tourists, but they are still waiting for a response from the agency.
