Wine Exports Down By 3% In 7 Months, While Up In Russia

Wine worth USD 121 million was exported from Georgia from January to July 2022. Last year, this figure stood at USD 124 million, which means that the annual income from wine exports is reduced by 3%.

Despite the Russia-Ukraine War, in the 7 months of the current year, Russia was still the leader in the export of Georgian wine, where wine worth USD 72 million was exported. It is also noted that compared to last year, wine exports to Russia have increased by USD 638 thousand.

As for Ukraine, in the past years it was the second exporting country after Georgian wine, where in 2021, USD 12.4 million worth of wine was exported. This year, the figure decreased to USD 5 million.

According to the statistics, the Ukrainian market has been replaced by Poland, and it takes the second place in wine exports with USD 8.8 million. China is in third place with USD 8 million. As of Geostat data, the fourth place among exporting countries is taken by Kazakhstan with USD 5 million, and the fifth place by Ukraine with USD 4.9 million.

In 2021, wine worth USD 234 million was exported from Georgia, and its share in the total exports of the country amounted to 6%.

Last year the export of wine hit a record high, although Russia still held a dominant position in the exports of Georgian wine. According to the National Wine Agency, the share of exports to the Russian market was 57% in 2021, which is the lowest figure both before the embargo (when 87% was occupied by the Russian market) and after the cancellation of the embargo. As for Ukraine, according to last year's data, its share was 10%. Last year, 12,921,321 million bottles of wine were exported from Georgia to Ukraine.
